Headshot of Dr. Culum-Williams
When Strategy Met Opportunity: Women's Suffrage in Idaho
In 1896, Idaho became the fourth state in the nation to grant women the right to vote—more than two decades before the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. But the path to suffrage in Idaho was far from straightforward. In this fascinating talk, Dr. Samra Culum-Williams explores the debates, unlikely alliances, and determined women who helped make Idaho a national leader in the fight for voting rights. From resistance among mining communities to surprising support in unexpected places, this presentation reveals the complex story behind one of the state’s most significant political milestones.

Dr. Culum-Williams is an educator at the College of Southern Idaho and a community historian dedicated to preserving and sharing the region’s past. A former chair of the Twin Falls Historic Preservation Commission, she has helped lead public tours, gallery exhibits, and educational projects that connect residents with the stories that shaped Southern Idaho. Through her work in the classroom and the community, she is passionate about bringing local history to life.
