Herrett Forum Distinguished Speaker Series Presents:

Navigating the Changing Landscape of Public Libraries in Idaho

Public Libraries serve a mission to provide resources to all community members. A national
movement to restrict access to certain media in public libraries has come to Idaho. A new state
law requires libraries to move materials considered harmful to minors or risk a lawsuit. Many
community members support this law, as well as future restrictions. Others champion the
freedom of access to materials, regardless of personal opinions. Charged with the daunting
task of following the new library law, how are public libraries navigating this new landscape?

Tara Bartley has been the Twin Falls Public Library Director for over nine years. She has been in libraries for over twenty-five years and has worked almost every position in a library. Before Twin Falls, she served as the Library Director in Titusville, Pennsylvania. She believes libraries are the discovery centers for today's knowledge. Libraries are not just about books anymore, but a place to gather for social and educational growth.
Tara grew up in Hagerman, Idaho. She earned her BS in Business Administration at Eastern Oregon University and her MLIS at Clarion University of Pennsylvania. Tara is married to her husband Joe and is blessed with their two children, Adelane and Nathan. Tara is happy to be back in Idaho, where she enjoys spending time outdoors surrounded by family.
