The Centennial Observatory - 2009 Astronomy Talk Schedule
Presented monthly on the Friday nearest the New Moon of odd months, in the Herrett Center’s Rick Allen Room. Start times vary seasonally. Adult admission: $2.50, students: $1.50, children 6 and under free.
Telescope viewing until midnight follows the talk (weather permitting). Admission: $1.50 or free with talk or paid planetarium show admission.
- January 23rd, 7:15 pm - "The Kepler Mission to Search for Earth-Sized Planets" - Learn how this space probe—scheduled to launch in March—will locate worlds that could harbor alien life.
- March 27th, 8:00 pm - “Annual Video Messier Marathon” - An introduction to Charles Messier’s catalog of deep-sky targets, and the all-night viewing session to image all 110 objects before sunrise.
- May 22nd, 8:30 pm - “Introducing Virgo, the Maiden” - The origin, mythology and interested targets of this zodiac constellation.
- July 24th, 8:30 pm - “Black Holes and the Large Hadron Collider” - Controversy and great scientific discovery surround the most powerful particle accelerator’s efforts to probe the universe’s deepest secrets.
- September 18th, 7:45 pm - "Uranus and its Moons" - The seventh planet is full of mysteries and surrounded by some of the solar system’s most bizarre moons and rings.
- November 13th, 7:15 pm - “Introducing Pegasus, the Winged Horse” - The origins, mythology, and interesting targets of this fall constellation.
